Head lice, also known as pediculosis are actually considered a parasite. Now a parasite is a life form that needs a host to live. That is, their survival is based on their ability to live off someone else. Head Louse are just such a creature and do quite well in the typical persons hair. Although a nuisance and definitely an irritation, both head louse and pubic louse are not dangerous to your health. Unlike mosquitoes that can spread disease, lice are simply an infestation problem.

Head louse is considered a growing problem in many areas of the country. It's been estimated that as many as 25-30 million people in the US alone are infested annually. From borrowing a comb or brush from a friend to trying on hats that don't belong to you, lice are easily transmitted from person to person. The under 12 year old group is most likely to become infested and is the reason that lice is a bigger problem at grade schools and child care centers. Girls also seem to be more likely to get head louse than boys.

  • Nymph -- A nymph is a stage in the life cycle of certain arthropods, as ticks and lice. Not the Greek Mythology kind!

  • Nits -- Nits are pubic lice eggs. They are hard to see and are found firmly attached to the hair shaft. They are oval and usually yellow to white and take about a week to hatch.

  • Nymphs -- The nit hatches into a baby louse called a nymph. It looks like an adult pubic louse, but is smaller. Nymphs mature into adults about 7 days after hatching. Blood sucking at this time is serious business
