HeadLice

What to Do When Headlice Come Calling

Let's face it, head lice are not only an itchy subject, but can also be a big embarrassment.  This is especially true if you've recently been called from work, because your child was identified as someone who has lice in their hair.  Here's a list of things that you should do if you find yourself in this situation.

  1. Don't panic.  Although head lice are a nuisance they aren't a health risk. Yes, they're a parasite that lives on blood, but unlike mosquitoes day don't carry diseases.

  2. Contain the area of infection.  Headlice and their eggs, called nits, can fall off the infected person's head and live for several days on furniture, carpet, and even stuffed animals.  Try to keep the person with the headlice in a more confined area to limit the potential of sharing the lice with others in your family

  3. Keep un-infected children, out of the person with head lice bedroom.  Why you want to contain the area of infection, you also don't want others to go into a known area where the risk of getting lice is greater.  Until all the bedding and stuffed animals are washed or treated, this bedroom should be off-limits to other children
  4. All combs and hair products that come in direct contact with hair should immediately be placed in a plastic bag and sealed.  These need to be either replaced or sterilize before being considered clean.

  5. Don't forget to wipe down the counters where the brush, comb, etc. may have been set.  This also includes any containers or holders for hair adornments like ribbons, bows or hair bands

After you've identified the areas of potential infection, it will then be time to start methodically going through them for treatment.  The first place of course, is your family members that have lice.  They probably have not only adult head louse but pre-adult nymphs and nits or eggs.

Although many people have claimed success using natural remedies such as olive oil, the fact is that many such treatments have failed as much or more than being successful.  The key to remember is that if a single nit or louse is left, you can expect another infestation within 30 days because the female louse can lay almost 200 eggs a month.

Don't risk it.  Use a high quality medicated shampoo and work though your home to rid yourself of these pesky bugs as quickly as possible
