Hair Lice

Hair Lice - Things That Make Us All Cringe

Nothing is more popular in the list of things that make us cringe category than seeing a case of full blown head lice. A well infested head of hair will almost move around because there's so much activity.

There's...

1. Adult louse jockeying for position to puncture a person's scalp to get a meal. ( Parasites live on other animals and lice need our blood to live)

2. adult lice mating

3. adult females laying eggs. -- as many as 200 a month

4. new hatchling nymphs are making their way out of there nit eggs and looking for a meal. (see number 1 above)

All this activity on one head of hair can cause an explosion of lice infestation in as little as a few weeks. This is why many schools will send children home that have been found infected with lice.

Consider that an adult female will lay about 200 eggs a month. At that rate, at the end of the second month as many as 20,000 nits, or eggs will be on that single head of hair and over 2 million eggs at the end of only 3 months. This is what make headlice so difficult to get under control without a solid plan of action.

This is the main reason why school districts and schools are on the lookout for any hair lice outbreak. By not taking immediate action, many other children may end up with lice.

Children seem to be the most at risk for getting lice in their hair. This no doubt is caused by their willingness to share hats combs and brushes with their friends.

There are many products on the market today for hair lice treatment for children. There seems to be just as many so-called natural remedies to deal with hair lice. These include olive oil, green tea extracts, petroleum jelly or petrolatum, and even mayonnaise. All these remedies have their champions who swear that the method really works. Unfortunately there are almost as many people who claim that the treatment is ineffective and doesn't work.

So where does that leave a concerned parent, who needs an effective head lice treatment for children? The answer is there are no simple solutions to dealing with hair lice other than a methodical attack using high-quality products. New head lice can be expected if the removal of the initial hair lice is not done correctly and completely.
