Does Hairspray keep Lice Away - and other Questions

There continues to be some questions like: does hairspray keep lice away.

The questions always seem to be around the effectiveness of home remedies like hairspray to kill or keep from getting head lice. The reason for all the questions is that most are mainly urban legend type of cures that while wides reported, simply do not work.

While there are many home remedies that report successes none have been tried or have been shown effective in a clinical or research environment. Unfortuneately, none have been verified as being true cures.

The problem with home head lice treatments is that they are all based on the concept of smothering the louse. That is, you subject to your head to being covered in a variety of goos or other thick or viscous materials to keep head louse from being able to breathe. This idea is that if they're unable to breathe, they will then die.

This is the basic concept for many home remedies and treatment programs. The problem however is that the killing ability of these treatments is limited to their time on an infested persons head. It's common for the olive oil, motor oil, hair conditioner, mayonnaise, hairspray or other water based hair product.

The idea is to make the hair uninhabitable for the louse and this in turn makes them die by smothering or jumping off for a potentially better neighborhood like your own head.

Now think about the hair spray or hair lacquer product a minute. It makes hair stiff and keep it in position. It also keeps everything else like dirt and yes, NITS or louse eggs also in position. So you can see, this isn't a

good idea.

While hair gel, hair wax and other aerosol spray hair products may be claimed by some to be effective against a louse infestation, don't you believe it. For every person that says a home remedy is effective, there's hundreds more that tried it and it didn't work. So use your good common sense and attack head lice with known products that work.

If not, don't be surprised if the lice come back again in another month or two.

What does head lice look like? You can check around on this site for various pictures (enlarged of course) of the common pediculosis capitis or head lice. To check, they're about the size of a grain of rice and are dirty white or grey in color. They can usually be found behind the ears and the nape of the neck within an inch of the scalp. The adults and nymphs look like rice that moves.
