Head Louse

Don't let Even ONE Head Louse Live!

Head louse are great propagators.  That is, they breed very fast and can go from 1 to hundreds within as little time as a month.  This means that if you have even a single louse egg, you run the risk of a massive re infestation within 30 days.

Head louse come from coming into contact with someone else who has been infested. This could be from sharing a comb or even a hat. Don't let this be confusing for you though, parasitic head louse are a problem and can grow into a big problem fast.

If you're looking for a head louse cure, be aware that what you need is one that's both effective and SAFE. But the key is that you definitely need one fast.

The reason is that the mature female louse can lay as many as 200 eggs a month.  Give them a week, and you have 200 lice bugs crawling through your hair.  Another week and those pre-adult nymphs are adults!  Assume that half are females and at the end of 2 months, you could end up with 100 females laying 200 eggs for a potential total of 20,000 louse eggs all ready to explode into a serious lice infestation!

Now you can say ICK!

Now to complicate things more, the eggs and louse can fall off into your carpet.  This isn't a major concern however because the parasite can't live for more than a day or two off a host.  They literally starve to death.  Remember, they eat blood as their diet.  The pre-adult and adult louse needs to drink blood from the host (you or your family) to live.

Okay, now stop that scratching and saying ICK! and keep reading.

Louse or lice are very easily transmitted through direct contact.  The easiest place to contract a case of head louse is through bedding.  If your child has lice, eggs and possibly even adult and pre-adult louse are in his bed.  Not only that, but they've also been known to make a temporary home on stuffed animals and other furry type objects.  All you or another child needs to do is lie down on that infested bed and you have another family member with head louse!

Interestingly enough, parasites are host specific.  That is, a human head louse will not make their home on an animal such as the family pet.  This is why fleas, ticks and other canine and feline parasites typically do not set up housekeeping on humans.  This simply means that although you and every member of your family are at risk for contracting a good case of head louse, the risk to the family pet is zero!

This is actually great news as it's one less body that needs to be cleaned. There are a lot of home remedy for head louse ideas floating around on the Web. Although many are inneffective at best, some actually can help you get rid of the lice problem.

For an interesting read, you may want to check out the head louse treatment area.  There are lots of natural remedies that are explored.  Realize that many of the natural or home treatments are at best only 50% effective.

With the number of head lice that can multiply from a single louse in a month, I'm not satisfied with a 50% failure rate. The information is an interesting read if nothing else however.  Enjoy.
