Here is a list of the possible types of treatment ideas that are available from a variety of sources.

Insecticides and Pesticides
Some insecticides used to treat head louse contain ingredients like Malathion, Phenothrin, and Permethrin.  Carbaryl is a prescription medication that is used when the more common insecticide poison based products didn't work as expected.

Most products use very strong chemicals that frankly can have side effects ranging from a simple rash to serious allergic reactions.  These head lice poison based products are available in several forms but the most common are shampoos.  Be aware that anyone with sensitivity to smells or has a respiratory ailment such as those with asthma should not use these products.

In no event should these products be used to treat anyone under the age of two.  Check with your doctor before considering any ot these products for very young children or for pregnant women.  Shampoos are the least effective of these treatments.

Combing
Combing with a fine-toothed comb is another head louse treatment method that works to collect the lice, nits and nymphs.  The comb used should be of high quality metal with metal teeth no more than 0.3mm apart.   You need to make certain that every nit or egg is captured and collected.  Leaving even 1 nit can result in re infestation within weeks.

Insecticide Lotions
This kills living lice on contact.  The key is to follow the instructions carefully and completely.  If they say 10 minutes, wait the 10 minutes.  Failure to follow the instructions will result in all the lice not being killed and the problem still being evident.

Alternative Treatments
Alternative or natural treatment options use a variety of essential oils with natural disinfectant and bug killing characteristics.  We're talking about essential oils such as tea-tree and other herbal type formulations.  Although not as thoroughly researched, there are many people who have used these products successfully for years.

There are many head louse herbat treatment options that are much safer and milder for young scalps. They work and can do the job if you follow use the instructions carefully.
